  • Scottish Pebbles and Cobbles

    scottish pebbles scottish pebbles

Here at the stone and garden as you may know we sell a huge range of products such as gravels, boulders, building aggregates etc. But one of the more specialist products that we have in stock are known as Scottish Pebbles and Cobbles. As you may be able to recognise from the name of these the stone are sourced from the Highlands of the UK. The Scottish Stones range in size starting at just 8mm all the way up to 450mm. Size isn’t the only thing these specialist products range in; the colour and shape are also factors of this as each stone is unique due to this being a naturally quarried product. As this is naturally quarried it also means that the stone have a smooth, rounded feel to them. The colours range massively as the stones include different shades of browns, whites, creams and greys. All of the Scottish range is a high strength material which means that they are very durable and hard wearing which means it’s a good contender for being used for things such as driveways and paths.

The smallest size that we sell here at Stone and Garden is the 8-14mm Scottish Pebbles and the next size up are the 14-20mm. These two smaller sets of stones are very similar and only differ with the sizes. The applications of these two ranges of sizes are pretty much the same as they are both mainly used for things like paths and boarders. Our customers also use these for things such as driveways, decorative stones around plants and water features and other things like that.

The larger pebbles come in two sets 20-30mm and 30-50mm and these are just like the 8-14mm and the 14-20mm in the sense that they are very similar within the applications and only differ in size. The most common application for these two sets are driveways as the pebbles are too big to get stuck in the tires of cars and other vehicles so the pebbles last longer. Other applications include things such as boarders, paths, around ponds and just general landscaping.

The next size up is the 50-80mm Scottish Cobbles this size isn’t the most ideal to use for driveways as the stones are too large and there is only usually one layer of this size in comparison to the 14-20mm Pebbles. The main applications for this size are to be used in and around decorative features such as ponds, water features, plants and other things along these lines.

The next two sizes are 80-120mm and 150-200mm and similar to the 50-80mm these are mainly used in and around water features or over small areas due to the depth of the stones being too big. However one thing that is different to the rest of the Scottish stones is that some customers set these larger cobbles in cement to create amazing paths and walkways. This way the stones don’t move which is excellent as it wouldn’t need topping up or anything after a long time.

The final size within the Scottish range is the Scottish boulders which range in size from 300-450mm. These are used mainly as garden features and water features or with rockeries with the size of them being as big as they are.

The Scottish range is available from the Stone and Garden Company in bulk bags of every size and in pre-packed bags up to the size of 50-80mm. Have a look at the website now and order your own Scottish pebbles and/or cobbles by 12 noon to get them as early as the next day.

  • Choosing a Sub-base

Here at The Stone and Garden Company we are often asked for advice on which material is the best to use for a sub-base.  This is really going to depend on what the sub-base is supporting or going to be used for.

40mm MOT Type 1 is an ideal base layer for driveways, roads, car parks and buildings, or any application that intends to bear heavy loads. Named after the Ministry of Transport specification for granular sub-base material, this is one of the most widely used approved sub-base in the construction industry.  40mm MOT Type 1 can be made from Granite, Limestone or clean Crushed Concrete. The product is crushed to 40mm down to dust creating an aggregate containing a range of particle sizes that is easy to compact with excellent load bearing properties.

20mm Crusher Run is an ideal base for areas of lower traffic such as patios, pathways or block paving.  It is a creamy buff colour mixture of angular stones and dust which also makes it ideal for as a topper for driveways.

40mm Dust Recycled is a very cost effective product and is becoming very popular with Builders for sub-bases prior to paving or concreting.

40mm Dust Recycled 40mm Dust Recycled

    How deep should it be?

The thickness of your sub-base is all dependent on what it will be supporting and the

    condition of the ground on which it will be laid.  Rough guidelines are;

Patios and garden paths – 75 - 100mm well compacted

    Driveways and patios – 100 - 150mm well compacted

40mm MOT Type, 20mm Crusher Run, and 40mm Dust Recycled are all available in 850kg Bulk Bags and can be ordered through our website or over the telephone by calling our sales team on 0800 0832 853.

    Do I need Weed Control?

Prior to laying your sub-base, we recommend laying a Weed Control Membrane  as this helps to reduce the risk of weeds coming up through the surface. Here at the Stone and Garden Company, our Weed Control Membrane and Pegs are on offer at 50% OFF when you buy any bulk bag material!

We also supply other building products which you may need for your project including paving sand, sharp sand and 20mm ballast.  These can be supplied in 850kg bulk bags and in smaller 20kg bags. Also, check out our website for special offers on decorative stone such as our 20mm Red Granite reduced from £136 to just £110!!

  • Dove Grey is a great choice

10mm grey round bush Dove Grey Boarders

Here at the Stone and Garden Company we sell a large range of product from building aggregates to decorative stones and boulders. One of the gorgeous looking stone we sell is the Dove Grey which is also known as Derbyshire Peak stone to some around the United Kingdom. This particular stone has a very strong attractive look to it when shining in the sunshine and gives off a very dramatic vibe when wet. Its everyday colouring includes a soft creamy grey colour which has the power to add some shine to any garden, driveway or seating areas. One good thing about this product is that it is a naturally quarried product so every piece has a different shape; this also means that the size can vary slightly which makes it even better for binding as the smaller pieces will be able to fill gaps that the bigger ones can’t do.

The Dove Grey Stones are available
here at the stone and garden company in two variations; one comes as a 20mm Stone and the other comes approximately between 8mm and 15mm.

20mm dove grey driveway 20mm Dove Grey

To begin with the 20mm Dove Grey is a very durable stone that is really high strength and hard wearing. This goes along with its angular shape that helps the stones blind together really well to make it the ideal stone to use for a driveway. The stone are less likely to disperse due to them all blinding together once compacted upon which gives them the power to work together to hold each other down. As well as a good applicant for a drive way the 20mm Dove Grey is also a good contender for other things such as paths, boarders, landscaping and general ground cover. This is down to the fact of the stone looking as nice as it does in any weather be it wind, rain or shine the 20mm Dove Grey shows different character in the sun compared to when its wet.

10mm grey path Dove Grey Path

The 8-15mm Dove Grey option isn't too much different to the 20mm in relation to the colour and strength. It is too a very high strength, durable material that binds together well to form a hard surface safe for driveways. However there is something that the 8-15mm Dove Grey can bring to the table that the 20mm doesn't, it can be used mulching to help retain the moisture in the soil so you can look after you garden much better. Also that means that it prevents weed growth in the garden and protects the plants when the winter season comes around. These pebbles are also commonly used around water features with the stone being as small as they are and being such a nice colour it makes it the perfect candidate for the job.

The Dove Grey is available to purchase any time on our website just click the highlighted link on either 20mm Dove Grey or 8-15mm Dove grey and then you will be re-directed to the right webpage. You can also call our sales team for a free quote or some advice and they are available from Monday –Saturday 8am until 8pm on 0800 0832 853. The 20mm Dove Grey is available from just £80 and the 8-15mm Dove Grey from just £216.

  • 20mm Moonstone

Here at the Stone and Garden Company one of the fantastic looking gravels we have on sale is Moonstone. The contracting colours provide a sharp look to the eye and can lighten up dark worn corners of a garden to give your garden a better look all year round. The colours of brown, black and a creamy white make this gravel a good selection for a variety of projects such as paths, decorative landscaping and even around water features and fish ponds and the gravel is fish friendly. The beauty of the specific stone means that it looks well throughout the whole year as it even has a gorgeous look to it when it’s wet. Here at Stone and Garden the Moonstone gravel is a naturally quarried product which does mean that the size, shape and formation could vary slightly which adds a brilliant variety to the stone giving it a great effect when laying it down.

    moonstone Moonstone Driveway

One other thing that we are asked about
this product and has popped up many times and again this week is "is your Moonstone Flint Gravel suitable to use as Driveway Gravel?

The answer to that is most certainly yes, the Moonstone Gravel is a 20mm flint that binds together wonderfully well when compacted or driven upon. Unlike some other rounded gravels Moonstone Flint does not disperse under pressure which ensures that once laid on your driveway it stays on your driveway even when large vehicles are driven on it.

The 20mm Moonstone is sold in different ways here at the Stone and Garden Company and its available in 850kg Bulk Bags at just £96 and 42 x 20kg Bags at only £118 which are available to order through the website or available to order over the phone by calling our sales team for free on 0800 0832 853.

A question we are asked regular by customers is about the area that our Bags cover. We recommend that one Bulk Bag would cover an approximation of around 10-12 square metres with the depth being around 4-5cm. This is an estimated figure based on this depth so a smaller depth would have a greater range so applying it deeper would reduce the area it would cover. Similar to this the 20kg bags cover approximately 0.25 square meters with a depth of aroundmoonstone side of drive 5cm, so 4 bags would give you around 1 square meter. This applies to most of the products that we sell here and definitely in this case the 20mm Moonstone.

The Stone & Garden Company offers a variety of Delivery Services with main one being the standard economy 2-3 days service. However if you do require your order to be delivered the next day or at a specific time you can upgrade your delivery service which does include a small additional cost and can usually stipulate a morning or afternoon service.  All deliveries are made with a tail-lift vehicle which means it needs a hard solid level piece of ground to be unloaded upon. Please note that we don’t use cranes or hi-ab vehicles.

  • Blue Slate

blue slate 40mm                          40 mm Blue Slate

Here at The Stone and Garden Company we supply 20mm Blue Slate and 40mm Blue Slate to customers locally or nationally. Blue Slate is a naturally quarried material which means there will be a slight variation in size and shape. This mix of  attractive blue colours is becoming more and more popular as this decorative landscape is very pleasing to the eye and has a refreshing look when both wet and dry creating a bright new look to any project it is used for.

blue slate 20mm                           20mm Blue Slate

40mm Blue Slate is one of many slates we sell that is an extremely high strength material and hard wearing.  At Stone and Garden we would recommend buyers to use this long lasting product for driveways and large ground cover dealing with heavy maneuvers. The angular shape binds well together so that when driven upon by heavy traffic it will not disperse which is why it is the perfect material. As well as driveways Blue Slate is also used for paths, borders and landscaping. This decorative slate has often been used by customers with sleepers to create fantastic looking slate steps, which is one of many creative ideas that can be used, adding a modern contemporary edge to gardens or around homes.

Here at The Stone and Garden Company we also sell a smaller size of 20mm Blue Slate which is most popularly used for decorative landscape projects such as paths, walkways, borders, general garden cover, rockeries and water features. Using this product in borders and planters as a mulch is a great idea as it reduces water evaporation whilst still maintaining the nutrients for plants and wildlife.  This particular size Blue Slate is easier to walk along than the 40mm which is why we recommend the size of 20mm for smaller projects because the smaller sized slate adds a classy bold look to decorative landscape without overpowering  the project and making it look messy.

Blue Slate is easy to lay and a low cost compared to block paving, tarmac or concrete, which is why this product is a popular choice. Here at The Stone and Garden Company we supply our 20mm Blue Slate and 40mm Blue Slate in bulk bags or 20kg handy bags.  A bulk bag contains 850kg, currently for 20mm Blue Slate a bulk bag is priced at  £90.00 and a pallet of 42 x 20kg bags is £120.00. For 40mm Blue Slate in a bulk bag the price currently is £89.00 and a pallet of 42 x 20kg bags is £125.00. If you are unsure about this product you can order a sample bag for just £3.00. Loose loads can be delivered locally but for this you must contact sales team at free phone 0800 0832 853. If you are unaware exactly how much product you need you can use our Gravel Calculator to calculate how many bulk  bags or tonnes you need - this can be found at the bottom of your chosen product.

We offer FREE economy delivery (2-3) days to most UK postcodes. We offer other deliveries such as Next Day (overnight service),  Economy pre 12pm, Economy pre 10am, Next Day pre 12pm, Next Day pre 10am and Saturday AM services.
